Italian film producer Andrea Lervolino is partnering with the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus to launch a film program for students, aiming to boost the region’s filmmaking industry. The collaboration includes plans for internships and potential incorporation of digital animation. Lervolino, now an Antigua and Barbuda citizen, expressed his eagerness to engage directly with students and offer some the chance to gain filmmaking experience in Italy.
The program could transform UWI Five Islands into a leading film studies institution in the Caribbean, complementing UWI Mona’s existing but less successful film section. Lervolino’s introduction to the country was facilitated by Ambassador Dr. Dario Item, who helped secure a USD$100,000.00 contribution to the UWIFIC. The initiative also explores tax incentives to attract large-scale film producers to Antigua. Lervolino plans to shoot films in Antigua, showcasing local talent and supporting the artistic community.
