The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has adopted a new policy requiring senior government positions to be publicly advertised when they become vacant.
Cabinet said the policy, which takes effect immediately, is intended to broaden opportunities for suitably qualified people to apply for senior public service and government positions.The new approach will allow candidates from outside the public service to compete for posts that may previously have been filled through internal promotions. Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said permanent secretary vacancies, for example, could be advertised to the general public instead of candidates simply being promoted through the public service ranks. The Public Service Commission will remain responsible for appointments and selections within the public service.
Cabinet said publicly advertising senior vacancies would promote a more competitive and transparent selection process and help identify candidates with the required qualifications, experience and leadership abilities. In keeping with the new policy, the Government is inviting applications for executive chairman of the Citizenship by Investment Unit.
Cabinet said it is seeking suitably qualified and experienced candidates capable of providing strong executive leadership and oversight of the CIU. The successful candidate will also be expected to ensure the unit continues operating according to high standards of professionalism, accountability, integrity and regulatory compliance.
