( Real News Antigua ) The daughter of Russian Oligarch Andrey Guryev – who is said to be
the original owner of the Alfa Nero superyacht – is filing an appeal
against the Government of Antigua and Barbuda over the sale of the
vessel, and the chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP) says
this saga may not end very soon.
Attorney Dr. David Dorsett has filed an application in the Eastern
Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal challenging the High Court
decision that allowed the sale to go through.
UPP Chairman D.Gisele Isaac notes that the persons and entities
contesting the Government’s ownership and subsequent sale of the
superyacht are monied interests who can drag the matter out for a
very long time, and this will be of no beneficial purpose to the
country.
It is alleged that the Alfa Nero sale is now mired in at least six legal
claims. Last week, REAL News reported that the son of a senior
Cabinet minister had filed an injunction seeking to cancel the sale to
the auction winner – on the grounds that he had not paid for the
vessel within the seven-day deadline in the sale agreement.
Reportedly, the injunction is also seeking to have the next-highest
bidder awarded the right to pay for and assume ownership of the
yacht.
