On Sunday night, the much-anticipated 2024 National Housing and Urban Development Queen of Carnival competition took place at the ARG. With seven delegates competing in five exciting segments, it was clear from the start that this would be a tight competition, leaving the judges with the difficult task of determining the winner.
The night began with the interview segment, and it was Miss Furniture Gallery Chandrea Codrington who shone the brightest. Her impressive interview skills and captivating presence earned her the title of Best Interview. Additionally, Chandrea Codrington’s costume was deemed the best, showcasing creativity and attention to detail.
In the swimwear segment, delegate number 3, Kevinya Joseph, Miss Cool and Smooth , stole the show. Wearing a stunning swimwear called “Wave of Pearls,” designed and made by Shember Whaul of Needle and Threadz, Stevens claimed the title of Best Swimwear. Her confidence and grace on the stage left a lasting impression on the judges and the audience
When it came to showcasing their talent, delegate number 5, Shania Samuel, Miss Liat 2020, captivated the crowd. Her performance was not only entertaining but also showcased her immense talent. As one of the crowd favorites, Samuel was awarded the title of Best Performing Talent, solidifying her place as a standout in the competition.The evening wear segment brought forth the elegance and poise of the delegates, and it was delegate number 2, Desrie Markham from Miss Rawdon and Associates, who stole the spotlight. Markham’s dress, designed by Sharon Barton, caught the judges’ attention, earning her the title of Best Evening Wear. Markham’s consistent performance throughout the competition demonstrated that dedication and talent can lead to the ultimate crown.
While all the delegates showcased their unique qualities, two individuals stood out in particular. Miss Liat 2020, Shenia Samuel, the only plus-size delegate in the competition, proved that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Her confidence and charisma landed her the position of 2nd runner-up, challenging societal beauty standards.
Miss Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, Dominique Trotman, also displayed consistency and talent throughout the competition. Her remarkable performances earned her the title of first runner-up, showcasing her ability to excel in this highly competitive event.
The newly crowned Queen of Carnival is none other than Desrie Markham from Miss Rawdon and Associates. Markham’s consistent performance, coupled with her stunning evening wear, secured her the coveted crown. As the reigning queen, Markham will now focus on preparing to compete against ten other delegates in the upcoming 2024 Jaycees Queen Show, scheduled for August 31st at Carnival City.
