SOURCE: 268 Weather – Introduction
As we look ahead to the rest of the year, it’s time to unveil the latest rainfall forecast for Antigua.
The updated predictions indicate that the country will most likely experience near normal rainfall in 2023.
This forecast brings both relief and anticipation for the months to come.
In this blog post, we’ll delve into the details of the forecast, explore the factors influencing the weather patterns, and emphasize the importance of water conservation regardless of the forecast.
The Forecast
According to the latest data, the projected rainfall total for Antigua in 2023 is approximately 1167 mm (45.9 in).
The forecast comes with a high level of confidence, estimating a 70 percent probability that the actual rainfall will fall within the range of 972 to 1387 mm (38.3 to 54.6 in).
These numbers provide valuable insights into the expected weather conditions for the year ahead.
Probabilities and Predictions
Among the range of possibilities, the highest probability–44 percent, points towards near normal rainfall.
This suggests that Antigua is likely to experience a typical year in terms of precipitation.
Additionally, the forecast indicates a 78 percent chance of near or above-normal rainfall for 2023.
This high statistical probability provides some reassurance and allows us to prepare accordingly.
On the flip side, the chances of a drier-than-normal year are relatively low, with only a 22 percent likelihood.
Factors Influencing the Forecast
The forecast for Antigua’s rainfall in 2023 is influenced by a delicate balance between El Niño and warmer-than-normal tropical North Atlantic (TNA) conditions.
El Niño events typically lead to reduced rainfall, particularly during the wet season.
Conversely, warmer TNA temperatures are associated with enhanced rainfall.
In the current scenario, it appears that these opposing forces will neutralize each other, resulting in near normal rainfall for the region.
However, uncertainties remain due to the timing and strength of El Niño, as well as the eventual warmth of the TNA.
Historical Context
To put the forecast into perspective, let’s consider the standard climate period of 1991-2020.
During a typical year, Antigua receives an average rainfall of 1156.7 mm (45.54 in).
The fall/autumn season, spanning September to November, accounts for 58 percent of the wet season total and 38 percent of the annual rainfall.
Conclusion
It’s important to note that this forecast will be updated monthly throughout August.
The next update is scheduled for July 12, so stay tuned for any changes. Regardless of the predicted weather conditions, water conservation remains crucial.
By reducing our personal water usage and minimizing our water footprint, we not only benefit ourselves socioeconomically but also contribute to addressing water scarcity, mitigating climate change, preserving the environment, and saving money.
