Antigua and Barbuda’s Cardiac Well-being
Month, the Heart & Stroke Foundation Antigua and Barbuda, led by Consultant Cardiologist and President, Dr. Georgette Meade, emphasized the critical issue of heart failure. Dr. Meade recently shared valuable insights on heart health during an episode of House Calls dedicated to providing the latest medical advice.
During the programme, Dr. Meade highlighted the importance of recognizing the signs of heart failure and taking proactive steps.
“Heart failure is a chronic and progressive condition where the heart struggles to pump blood effectively, leading to serious health consequences. It is essential to understand its symptoms and seek medical attention promptly,” stated Dr. Meade.
The discussion covered various aspects, including the causes of heart failure, risk factors, and preventive measures. Dr. Meade explained that conditions such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and viral infections contribute to heart failure. Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress management play pivotal roles in preventing and managing heart health.
The programme also delved into the diagnostic process, emphasizing the significance of tests such as chest X-rays and echocardiograms. Dr. Meade clarified that early detection allows for better management and treatment options. She urged individuals to be vigilant about any changes in their health, such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, sudden fatigue, and swelling of limbs.
Dr. Meade encouraged the public not to underestimate the importance of heart health, especially during Heart Disease Awareness Month.
“Heart failure is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, but there is hope. With awareness, lifestyle modifications, and timely medical intervention, we can significantly improve heart health and reduce the risk of heart failure,” she affirmed.
As part of the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s commitment to raising awareness, it will host its 5th Annual Cardiac Symposium on February 25 at 8:30 a.m at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa under the theme, “Heart Disease & Stroke – “Where are we 5 years later?”
