The High Court has ruled against St Peter Member of Parliament Asot Michael in his legal challenge to his suspension from Parliament’s Lower House. The Court ruled this morning it had no jurisdiction over the internal proceedings of the legislature, a separate and co-equal branch of Government.
The Court also rejected Michael’s application for an injunction, seeking to lift his suspension from the Lower House. Michael was named and suspended earlier this year for what House Speaker Sir Gerald Watt KC labeled “hooliganism.” The MP had remonstrated loudly in response to a sotto voce remark from Government Benches, ignoring the Speaker’s instructions to desist.
