REAL NEWS – Monday, October 9, is Nomination Day in the St. Mary’s South constituenc, and everything related to the exercise is in place, says Supervisor of Elections Ian Hughes.
He says the candidates have a 10-hour window in which to complete the process, as required by law.
The Supervisor reports that the returning officer, Denise Parker, is ready for the day’s activity, which will see all the contenders, including Kelvin “Shugy” Simon, the United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate, being nominated by 10 individuals.
Hughes says the returning officer has already touched base with the candidates, notifying them that she will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, and in which building at the Bolans Primary School the process will be held.
Of the 10 persons taking part in the nomination exercise, there must be a proposer, a seconder, and eight other individuals known as assenters.
All must be residents of the constituency, with their names appearing on the voter’s register in order to qualify.
Meanwhile, addressing the claims and objections period for persons wishing to get onto the final Register for Elections, Hughes advises that this process ended on Tuesday, October 3.
However, the Supervisor adds that persons who requested a transfer cannot vote in the constituency in which they are seeking to be transferred unless they have met the follow conditions:
They must be notified to come in to the offices of the Electoral Commission – located upstairs the Passport Office on Queen Elizabeth Highway – where they will go through the completion process, which includes unlocking the database by way of their fingerprint.
Last Saturday, September 30, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced October 24 as the by-election date to fill the seat in the Lower House vacated by Simon.
