St. John’s, Antigua – The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus is set to host its 2024 Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the SJPC House of Restoration.
This highly anticipated event will celebrate the academic achievements of the graduating class and recognize two distinguished individuals for their outstanding contributions to advocacy and sports.This year’s honorary doctorate recipients for the Five Islands Campus include:Sir Curtly Elconn Lynwall Ambrose, Antigua and Barbuda’s cricket legend, who will be conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his extraordinary contribution to cricket.
His Excellency Ambassador Dr. W. Aubrey Webson, celebrated for his lifelong work in human rights advocacy, will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD).
The 2024 Graduation Ceremony marks another year of UWI’s long-standing tradition of honoring regional luminaries who have made significant contributions in various fields.
This year, 13 notable figures from across the Caribbean will receive honorary degrees during graduation ceremonies across UWI’s five campuses, including recognition for contributions in advocacy, medicine, education, culture, tourism, and sports.
Regional Honourees
In addition to the honourees from the Five Islands Campus, other distinguished individuals from the region will be celebrated at subsequent UWI graduation events, including:
Cave Hill Campus (October 19): Dame Susan Dilys Dougan (Governor General of St. Vincent and The Grenadines) for public service, Sir Trevor Hassell (Barbados) for contributions to medicine, and others.
St. Augustine Campus (October 24–26): Dr. Maniram Ragbir (Trinidad and Tobago/Britain) for reconstructive surgery and Dr. Patricia Rodney (Guyana) for medical and human rights work.
Mona Campus (October 31–November 2): Mr. Donald Anderson and Mr. Monte Blake for entrepreneurship and contributions to music, respectively.
Global Campus (November 9): Mr. Kirani James (Grenada) for excellence in athletics.
The ceremonies across UWI’s campuses, running from October to November, represent the pinnacle of academic and professional recognition for these regional icons. Their contributions to the Caribbean’s development in sports, advocacy, medicine, culture, and beyond have had a lasting impact on the region and the world.
For the Five Islands Campus, the spotlight will be on Sir Curtly Ambrose and Dr. W. Aubrey Webson, whose lives and careers exemplify the transformative power of dedication, leadership, and advocacy.
