Grandma Mirie Honored as Commander of the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage
Miriam Samuel, lovingly known as “Grandma Mirie,” was celebrated today during Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence festivities with the distinguished title of Commander of the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage (CH).
Recognized for her decades-long dedication to education and community development, Grandma Mirie has touched the lives of thousands and continues to inspire through her enduring commitment.
With a teaching career spanning over 40 years, Grandma Mirie has educated around 3,500 students across ten schools in Antigua, Barbuda, and Barbados.
Known for her skill in mathematics and craft, she made lasting contributions at institutions such as Ottos Comprehensive, Clare Hall Secondary, Pares Secondary, Potters School, John Hughes School, and Barbados’s Modern High School.
Her role in the community has been profound, offering guidance and support not only to her students but also to their families, becoming a central figure in social, cultural, and recreational life.
Despite her retirement, Grandma Mirie remains an educator at heart, continuing to teach informally within her community.
Through her small business, Screw Pine, she shares her knowledge of herbal medicine, offering over 90 products derived from her garden. Her line of natural remedies and agricultural products reflects her deep-rooted passion for health, self-sufficiency, and local traditions.
A committed environmental advocate, Grandma Mirie also champions tree planting and recycling efforts, contributing to the sustainability of her community.
Celebrating her 90th birthday, she published Miri’s Magic Recipe, a book capturing her life’s wisdom and insights, highlighting the resilience and strength of a woman who has led an extraordinary life of service.
