Hundreds support cancer care walk
St. John’s, Antigua. 17th October, 2023. Support continues to grow for CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Annual Walk for the Cure. Last Saturday’s Walk saw approximately 800 participants.
Speaking after the Walk, one of the bank’s Walk Managers, Natasha Charles, said that they were overwhelmed at the support of the staff, sponsors, well wishers and the general public.
“In this our 12th year of the Walk for the Cure, the public came out in their hundreds. It was wonderful. We also welcomed for the first time approximately 400 students who are part of the organisation GoodHumans268 which is an initiative of a group of educators and links 22 schools. As we continue to raise awareness of this dreaded disease while at the same time raising funds for care and to support families, we must express our thanks to everyone who participated.”
She said that the walk moved off from the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium and made its way down the Paynters main road, through Pigotts Village onto Factory Road and back to the stadium.
There was also great participation by Corporate Sponsors with UWI having 63 walkers, AS Bryden 48 and Galley Bay 35.
Country Head, Mrs. Ladesa James-Williams said as she watched the massive support, she felt a sense of pride that more persons are beginning to become aware of cancer and its effects.
“We are pleased by the incredible turnout which shows how deeply cancer has impacted all Antiguans and Barbudans. We remain committed to assisting the Oncology Department at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and Breast Friends in their fight against cancer. We walk to bring awareness and raise funds but also to show survivors that they have our love and support. We look forward to Walk for the Cure 2024.”
The 2022 Walk for the Cure donated EC$65,000 to these two designated organisations.
Mrs. James-Williams said that this year it is hoped that this figure will be higher.
