The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI) has implemented an automatic earthquake location system that detected a magnitude 4.0 earthquake on May 7th, 2023 at 05:49 am local time.
The earthquake’s location was recorded at latitude 18.38N and longitude 61.95W, with a depth of 10 km.The earthquake was located near Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, approximately 141 km to the north.
Other nearby cities include Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, located 148 km to the northeast, and Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, located 241 km to the north-northwest.
The implementation of the automatic earthquake location system has improved the SRC’s ability to detect and locate seismic activity accurately and efficiently.
The system’s real-time data processing and analysis capabilities provide a faster response to emergency situations, enabling the SRC to provide timely and accurate information to the public and relevant authorities.
The SRC continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant and informed about the potential risks associated with seismic activity.
