The swearing-in ceremony for the newly constituted Barbuda Council has been delayed by one week.
In a press statement, Member of Parliament for Barbuda Trevor Walker stated that the local government was forced to postpone the event from last Friday, due to circumstances beyond its control, and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
The new date is Friday, 21 April, 2023.
Barbudans overwhelmingly supported the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) in the March 29 biennial Council elections, which saw the party’s four candidates easily taking the seats that were in contention.
At the end of the count, the BPM – which had expressed confidence in its win prior to the polls – amassed a total of 1,683 votes from the over 2,600 that were cast.
The four – Devon Warner and Sharima Deazle-Myers, who were seeking re-election, and newcomers John Mussington and Fitzroy Warner – led the Antigua Labour Party candidates in all four boxes.
During next Friday’s swearing-in exercise, the new chairman of the Council, as well as the other portfolios, will be decided.
