From May 3 to May 17, 2024, fifteen soldiers from the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) are in Barbados to take part in Tradewinds 24, a significant multinational military exercise.
This event, which officially began on May 4 at Paragon Army Base with the ceremonial unfurling of flags from 26 nations, is designed to prepare joint militaries for potential operations at the Cricket World Cup 2024 through simulated exercises.
The exercise showcases an impressive display of unity and diversity, with each participating nation’s flag representing their commitment to multilateral relationships and collaborative security efforts.
According to Barbados Defence Force Commander Mark Peterson, the exercise co-lead, “This gathering of diverse nations united by a common goal enhances capabilities and strengthens partnerships among our forces.
Tradewinds 24, part of the Joint Staff-Large Scale Global Exercise 2024 (LSGE 24), is pivotal for fostering international cooperation and building capacities to address evolving global security challenges.”
Brigadier General Monie Ulis, U.S. Army South deputy commanding general, emphasized the focus on human rights, rule of law, and professionalization of militaries, saying, “Everything you will train on here is based on these principles, making our forces adaptable, trained, and ready to respond to transboundary challenges.”
With over 1,200 service members from more than 26 countries participating, the exercise provides a unique platform for enhancing interoperability and fortifying alliances. Brig. Gen. Ulis praised the high level of planning involved in bringing together so many nations and regional organizations for a common purpose.
