While the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded a 25.1% decrease in serious crimes for the year so far, there has been a 13.9% increase in murders.
This is according to Crime Chief Deputy Commissioner Wendell Blanhum during the launch of the GPF’s Christmas Policing Plan 2025 today.
Blanhum disclosed that from January 1, 2025 to November 9, 2025, there were 115 murders, compared to 101 during the same period last year.
Break and enter and larceny was registered as one of the most prevalent serious crimes in the country, with 190 incidents reported this year, compared to 269 last year, representing a 29.4% decrease.
There were 227 incidents of Robbery Under Arms this year, compared to 321 last year, a decline of 29.3%. Robberies alone had five reported incidents, compared to 11 last year, a decrease of 54.5%.
Additionally, this year, there were 27 cases of robbery with violence and 11 incidents of robbery with aggravation, representing decreases of 37.2% and 31.3% respectively.Meanwhile, there were 184 incidents of rape this year compared to 208 last year, a decrease of 11.5%; 23 incidents of burglary this year compared to 69 last year, a decrease of 66.7%; and 19 incidents of larceny this year compared to 31 last year, a decrease of 38.7%.
According to Blanhum, these statistics represent the sharpest drop in serious crimes over the past ten years.
Meanwhile, the numbers show that of all the murders committed this year, 81% of the victims were men while 19% were women.
The data also shows that most of the murders were committed in domestic and disorderly settings, though a smaller percentage were committed in execution style manners and during the course of robberies.
Most of the murders, 21%, were committed in Georgetown, followed by the East Bank of Demerara at 11%, then the East Coast of Demerara at 10%. Regions Two and Five had the least number of murders, at 2% and 3% respectively.
