A senior police officer yesterday warned against visiting the site of the Piparo mud volcano as he described it as a disaster zone. Senior Supt Wayne Mohammed pleaded with citizens to stay away from the area as he said the volcano could erupt at any time.
The area has been cordoned off with caution tape and a news release from the Ministry of National Security said it is closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. In a telephone interview with the Express, Mohammed said: “I am beseeching the media to assist the police in asking persons who are not living in and around the area of Piparo, not to venture to the mud volcano. That is a disaster zone. It can erupt at any time.”
