Barbados will be only partially open for business today.
Polyclinics and most Government departments will remain closed as authorities prioritise the clean-up of volcanic ash from the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent.
In a brief national address last night, Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams said village shops, supermarkets, bakeries, hardware stores, gas stations and pharmacies could open today, and Government would do everything to have the rest of the Public Service reopen between tomorrow and Thursday.
“We know what our essential services are from dealing with COVID-19. This is a difficult time for us. Many of us have not dealt with this before, but we will have to get accustomed to this in the short term,” he said.
The minister warned employers not to attempt to force workers to come in should there be volcanic ash falling today.
He also advised Barbadians to be their brother’s keeper in the coming days, especially in relation to the elderly or physically challenged.
