Rallying for The Bahamas

Caribbean brothers and sisters are rallying behind The Bahamas after a severe pounding from Hurricane Dorian devastated two islands and left at least 20 dead in the archipelago.

Incoming CARICOM chairman Prime Minister Mia Mottley, and outgoing chair Prime Minister of St Lucia Allan Chastanet, along with CARICOM secretary general Irwin LaRocque, landed in Grand Bahama yesterday.

They arrived with a slew of disaster management experts and delegations from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the Caribbean Development Bank and the Regional Security System. There, the two leaders had a briefing session with a number of agencies to determine the extent of the destruction.

In Barbados, major efforts are on to help the chain of islands through cash and other much-needed donations. The principal drive is being led by Government, which announced yesterday that the Rise Again Bahamas national telethon will be on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). It will be broadcast or streamed by all media houses.
