Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne will today, Friday participate in the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) special virtual meeting, at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT) to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
The event’s agenda include remarks by:
o The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and Chair of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Gaston Browne,
o The Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia, Marta Lucía Ramírez,
o The United States Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ricardo Zúñiga,
o The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, and
o The Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, and former Permanent Representative of Peru to the Organization of American States, Manuel Rodríguez Cuadros.
The Inter-American Democratic Charter was adopted on 11 September 2001 by a special session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, held in Lima, Peru.
It was a mandate from the Third Summit of the Americas, held in April 2001 in Quebec, Canada. There, the Heads of State and Government of the Hemisphere instructed the foreign ministers to prepare a letter that would strengthen “the OAS instruments for the active defense of representative democracy”.
It is recognized as one of the most complete inter-American instruments, enacted for the promotion and strengthening of the principles, practices and democratic culture among the states of the Americas.
