Plastic ban takes effect

THE BAN on single-use plastics is in effect from today, and one conservationist is urging Barbadians not to focus on the price of the alternatives but on the savings to the environment.

Marine biologist Nikola Simpson told the DAILY NATION that while she understood the costs of the alternatives might be higher, “don’t look at that, but look at how we are saving the environment. There are alternatives to everything that is being banned so no excuse can be made as to why we cannot enforce the ban”.

She said that last year Barbados imported over 100 million plastic bags, 150 000 pounds of plastic cups (the weight of 43 ZR vans) and 140 000 pounds of straws, enough to fill nine 40-foot containers.
