“It is a great accomplishment. When I started singing calypso, I never thought I would be awarded with an Order Of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT).”
So said 2019 ORTT recipient Hollis Urban Lester Liverpool, fondly known as Chalkdust (or Chalkie) who is to be conferred with the country’s highest national award today, Republic Day.
Chalkdust, who is also an Associate Professor of History at University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), said yesterday: “It is not only for calypso and culture. I received the Hummingbird Medal in 1976 for my work in culture. It is for my work in education. I have taught at primary, secondary and university levels.”
The Office of the President yesterday advised that Chalkdust will be bestowed the award for Distinguished and Outstanding Service to Trinidad and Tobago.
