New system, same long lines

Barbadians returned to the supermarkets and banks in droves yesterday on Day 1 of the new alphabetical shopping system, but it was not without long lines and in some cases long faces.

And even though Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw expressed satisfaction with how the day progressed, some shoppers have asked Government to have another look at the system that was announced last Saturday night.

On Tuesday, people whose last names begin with the letters C to F were allowed to shop at supermarkets, fish markets and hardware stores from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and to conduct banking from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those from S to Z could shop and bank from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

At Massy Holetown, St James, the line extended through the carpark and beyond.
