The latest Ministry of Health COVID-19 report has put the number of new COVID-19 cases in Dominica at 50 and the number of active cases at 627, as at September 16th, 2021.

“As at September 16th, 2021 [Thursday] our total number of new cases is 50,” National Epidemiologist, Dr. Shallaudin Ahmed reported during a press briefing on Friday night (September 17th).. “Forty-eight (48) of them are antigen positive and 2 are PCR positive.”

New cases were ten less that what had been reported the previous day, September 15th; there have been 2173 recoveries.

“Total number of tests conducted 64, 841, of them 25,778 were PCR tests and 39,063 were rapid antigen tests,” Dr. Ahmed stated.

The national epidemiologist further revealed that 50% of the adult population had taken at least one dose of the vaccine and 44.6 % of the target population was fully vaccinated. It is unclear what the target population is.

He also disclosed that while 117 new cases of the virus were reported on September 13th, 2021, for the rest of the week, the number of cases went down.

“So on average, we have about 57 cases per day; so this is down from 67 cases from the previous week,” Dr. Ahmed explained. “Severe cases are just about 6%, moderate cases about 8% and 81% of the cases are mild to asymptomatic.”

He said this was consistent with the global data that “we have seen so far.”

Out of a total number of 1966 cases, Dr. Ahmed revealed that 76% were unvaccinated and only 25% were vaccinated.
