Mia joins call for reparations

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has joined the CARICOM Reparations Commission in its call for Britain and the European Union to meet and make arrangements to tangibly right the wrongs of slavery and colonisation.

“There must first be an apology and an acknowledgement that wrong was done and that successive centuries saw the extraction of wealth and the destruction of people in a way that must never happen to any society or any race in this world again” Mottley said yesterday.

She also pressed for acknowledgement by the colonisers of their obligation to give assistance to a Caribbean they left in “very dire social and economic circumstances”.

Speaking in a University of the West Indies televised media forum on the subject of reparations, Mottley also rapped Britain and the EU for the treatment of the Caribbean in the post-independence period.
