Lawyers’ fees too high

Dean of The University of the West Indies Faculty of Law, Prof Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, believes lawyers’ fees in Trinidad and Tobago are too high.

In fact, she thinks they may be the highest in the Caribbean.

“As a Caribbean woman, I am conscious that they are among the highest, if not the highest, than anywhere else in the Caribbean,” she told an inter-faith service for yesterday’s opening of the 2019/2020 law term, held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Port of Spain.

“I wonder if this is partly because, although there has been a fused profession for over three decades, we are still clinging on to the division…instructing attorneys and so on…resulting in two sets of fees, which is not necessarily the case anywhere in the region,” Antoine said.
