“Kamla-mania” is no longer the case today and United National Congress leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be 73 years old in 2025 for the next general election, so the party must seek change and rebrand with Vasant Bharath.
So said former Independent Liberal Party leader Jack Warner as he made a special appearance on UNC leadership challenger Bharath’s virtual meeting last night.
Warner said, “I stand in full support of Vasant because since my departure from electoral politics under the UNC, the Rising Sun has set and has failed to shine under Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
“By 2025, she will be 73 years old and the PNM will slaughter the UNC in an age when other countries are seeking younger leaders with vision.
“I stand with the Unity Team because in many ways this is déjà vu, 2010 all over again. Nothing short of a revolution like the dethroning of Kamla Persad-Bissessar, as was done with Basdeo Panday in 2010, would ever see the UNC return to government in 2025.”
Warner recalled the events of 2010.
“At that time, the same people now struggling to keep Kamla politically alive were the same people who struggled to keep Basdeo Panday politically relevant. Many of them posturing inside and outside of Parliament today, were still in their political pampers at that time – many of them are still in those same pampers today.
“They have no sense of UNC’s history… they don’t even know the role Vasant had played in bringing Panday and me together in 2007.
“That 2010-2015 excitement is no longer there because UNC’s political leader has forgotten how to win. She’s been defeated so many times that any minute figment of success seems now acceptable to her. Being beaten in eleven elections is a disgrace.”
Warner added, “Don’t buy the rhetoric that she gained one extra seat more in 2020. Kamla mustn’t be allowed to fool you anymore into thinking that she’s the saviour of the UNC … This internal election is about brand development and Kamla doesn’t have the image to win the support of the national community; Vasant does – I say so without apologies.”
Warner said Jearlean John could have won La Horquetta but people refused to trust her because of Persad-Bissessar’s leadership.
Warner said Bharath presents a sober image for the party.
“Vasant will never embarrass the party in the Parliament with wrong history and then blame it on some medication for an alleged illness,” he said.
“Regardless of how many Africans she puts forward for cosmetic purposes, that will not help her to win the General Election in 2025. Under Kamla’s Star, all you hear about is who is traitor and who is knife and fork Indian – as if that will help the UNC beat the PNM in 2025.”
