Fifty Percent of All Imports Into Antigua and Barbuda Are For Food Items

The Food and Agriculture Organisation has prepared a report for the country which indicates that agriculture can play a major role in the country’s economic development. In this regard,the Minister of Agriculture presented a paper which was written by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) at his request. The FAO paper showed the important role which agriculture could play in expanding economic opportunities, and saving millions of dollars in food importation. Nearly 50% of all imports into Antigua and Barbuda were for food items and, of that amount, six out of every ten dollars spent on imports went to purchasing chicken. The Minister made several proposals for expanding agriculture, and the Cabinet has agreed to consider the proposals next Wednesday during Cabinet meeting, following the provision of additional data
