Farley nominated President of the Senate

Former parliamentarian Reginald Farley will be returning to Barbados to take up the post of President of the Senate.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced earlier on Thursday evening in a media release that she nominated him for the post.

The position became vacant when Sir Richard Cheltenham QC announced his retirement from public office, effective August 30, 2020.

The release follows below:

“It is with pride and pleasure that I announce today my nomination of former Member of Parliament, Reginald Farley, to fill the vacant position of President of the Senate.

Mr Farley, who is currently stationed in Ottawa as this country’s High Commissioner to Canada, returns home shortly for his formal appointment to the Senate. He will subsequently be the Government’s nominee for President of the Senate, at the commencement of the new parliamentary session on September 15.

Ambassador Farley served as a member of both Houses of Parliament and as a Minister of Government in a previous Barbados Labour Party administration. His ministerial portfolios included Industry, Commerce and Business Development; Industry and International Business; Economic Development; Education, Youth Affairs and Sports; and Housing and Lands.

Mr Farley was first appointed to the Senate in 1994 and served until 1999. That same year he contested and won the Christ Church East seat and remained the representative in the House of Assembly until 2008.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, he has also held the posts of Executive Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados (ICAB), and Executive Director of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce. Mr Farley is also a trained teacher and former tutor at the Barbados Community College.

His appointment to the Senate and imminent nomination for the post of President of the Senate was occasioned by the resignation from the upper chamber and retirement from public life of former President, Sir Richard Cheltenham.
