WORKERS AT THE School Meals Department in Lancaster, St James, can’t take the heat anymore.
They downed tools yesterday during the morning and gathered outside the building after conditions became too hot to handle.
As a result, some schools were served with lunch late and up to 1:30 p.m., when a DAILY NATION team was on plant, others had not received theirs.
Staff complained that only one of the seven steamers was working, the majority of equipment repeatedly broke down, the extractor fans were dysfunctional and workers were fearful of getting sick from a building with an asbestos roof.
Acting Minister of Education Senator Lucille Moe, Parliamentary Secretary in the ministry Dr Rommel Springer and other education officials responded to the call from the staff for an urgent meeting.
They toured the building and heard the concerns of many of the 25 workers.
