A call is being made for the Computer Misuse Act to be updated to deal with the behaviour of some children while online, and what they were exposed to.
It has come from executive director of Sunisle Technology Solutions, Steven Williams, as he addressed a virtual parent webinar titled You, Your Child And Social Media via Zoom on Saturday. The webinar was hosted by Winners Circle, the Criminal Research and Planning Unit and the Maria Holder Memorial Trust.
“Technology for a specific use can be abused by those who have no scruples, and see it as a way or as an object to hurt other people. Yes, we have cybersecurity laws, but there are some particular areas of the law that aren’t quite there yet in terms of the behaviour of children online,” said Williams, a father of two girls aged six and 16.
He noted that the Computer Misuse Act had not been updated since 2005, yet technology continued to change rapidly.
