Big boost for needy families

Another $10 million is being pumped into Government’s Adopt-A-Family programme to help vulnerable people cope with the fallout from COVID-19.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced yesterday that the initiative – launched in March as the pandemic struck Barbados, and which sees such families receiving a monthly stipend of $600 – will continue for a further five months.

The move received support from Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley, but he urged the Mottley administration to pay even more attention to the “painful misery” of thousands of Barbadians.

The House of Assembly approved a supplementary for $10 million to extend the programme from November 1, to March 31, 2021; and $12 million for the Urban and Rural Development Commissions to fund the installation of water and water-borne facilities for households without running water and those using pit toilets.
