IT IS NOT Christmas shopping as usual for some Barbadians this year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
That was the common thread a number of shoppers at the bustling Sheraton Centre yesterday told the DAILY NATION of buying only to budget, spending “sparingly”, cutting back when compared to previous years, and even reusing and recycling rather than replenishing, to celebrate the Yuletide season.
Scores of people were waiting to go inside at different entrances, just before the Sargeant’s Village, Christ Church mall opened at 9 a.m. Some stores had long lines outside their doors.
At Gifts & Things, Eveline Belle was shopping with her grandson Hasani Prescod. She said this Christmas would not be like past years.
“We are not doing as much as usual,” she said, adding she was only looking to get a special gift for the boy because his birthday also fell on Christmas Day.
Nicola Hunte said she was working on a tight budget.
