Antigua and Barbuda becomes the first Caribbean Island to Chair a Regional Grouping that focuses on Social Development in the Region

Antigua and Barbuda became the first Caribbean island yesterday to be appointed to the chairmanship of the presiding officers for the ministries of social development in the region. Minister of Social Transformation Dean Jonas, gracefully accepted the new role during the first day of a three day conference on social development for Latin America and the Caribbean of which Antigua& Barbuda is the host country.

The regional conference on social development is held every two years. The conference focuses on disasters, inequality and social protection in current protracted crisis, that is the covid-19 pandemic. It is  organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the government of Antigua& Barbuda and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The general objectives of the regional conference include promoting the development of national policies on Social Bi-lateral Corporation in the field of social development and inequality and structural gaps. The social development agenda for the next two years involves working in the following areas:

  • Childhood Development
  • Food and Nutrition Security
  • Person with disabilities protection
  • Social security
  • Social innovation
  • Social investment
  • Spending  
  • Youth
