Antigua and Barbuda and the OECS States To Help the Bahamas

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has informed the Cabinet of the O.E.C.S. decision for each of the states including Antigua and Barbuda to provide US$100,000 to the Bahamas at this time of great need.

According to the Prime Minister, although it is acknowledged that the sum is small compared to the damage caused by the Hurricane Dorian, the gesture is intended to let the Bahamian people know that the people of the Eastern Caribbean feel their pain.

The Prime Minister said all the states have been hit by hurricanes that have caused great pain and suffering, since 1995 when Hurricane Luis wrought great destruction in several island-countries.

He said that the Cabinet agreed to forewarn the Barbuda Council and population that any Category Five Hurricane that threatens Barbuda will result in action designed to save them from harm and death.

The Prime Minister added although several shelters have been strengthened and repaired on Barbuda, storm surges of very high levels of water can prove more deathly than wind, as Dorian demonstrated.
