Antigua and Barbuda and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have pledged to continue to strengthen the already strong bonds of friendship that exist in their ongoing relations.
Both countries made the pledge during a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. E.P Chet Greene by the newly appointed Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda from the PRC, Mr. Sun Ang.
Minister Greene re-emphasised the fact that the PRC remains Antigua and Barbuda’s most valuable developmental partner as over the years it has made significant contributions to the country’s development in infrastructure, utilities, health, security services, agriculture, economic development and training; virtually all aspects of the nation’s development.
He noted that Antigua and Barbuda’s relations with the PRC are based on the ‘One-China’ policy first articulated and implemented by the late Father of the Nation, National Hero, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, which has been continued by successive governments since.
The minister referenced the several areas of cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and the PRC in the international arena, including CELAC and the United Nations. In fact, the minister noted that China has sought Antigua and Barbuda’s support for several of its candidates who sought election to a variety of United Nations committees and other international organisations. In all cases, Antigua and Barbuda gave support to the PRC Candidates.
For his part, Ambassador Sun stated that whilst the distance between Antigua and Barbuda and the PRC is great, the distance, in terms of the hearts of the two peoples, is very close. He said he looks forward to building on the already strong bonds between the two countries as they work to further human developments generally.
Ambassador Sun presented his credentials to the Governor General, Sir Rodney Williams, as well as paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne as part of his formal engagements on Thursday.
