Woman shields baby from bullets as gunmen kill husband in T&T

A one-year-old baby girl was almost the victim of a fatal shooting in central Trinidad which claimed the life of her father on Monday night.

The incident is one of many in the Enterprise, Chaguanas community in the last few weeks.

This incident, however, left 29-year-old Jamaican national Dwayne Robinson dead.

His wife, Allison Vialva-Robinson, was also shot in the right buttock during the gun attack but survived to tell the story.

The two had been married for five years and lived at Goodwill Street, Enterprise.

Yesterday, Vialva-Robinson said her husband had just got home from work after 8 pm. He was relaxing on the street. She said a car drove by on more than one occasion before the attack.

Vialva-Robinson, who spoke with Guardian Media at her home, was in tears and grimacing in pain from her gunshot wound.

She said, “I was facing the road with the baby on my lap, then the car approached and three gunmen started to fire shots. I had to jump up and turn around to run and that is how I got shot and my husband got multiple shots and died. By the time we took him to the hospital he had no vitals at all, they tried to do all that they could have done but he was already dead.”

Robinson came to T&T from Jamaica in 2013 and was a skilled labourer. He moved into the Enterprise area only five years ago.

Several people said yesterday he was not involved in any criminal activity and he was described as the life of the party.

He returned to Jamaica in 2017 and came back to Trinidad in 2018 and had not returned to his home country since then.

According to police reports, occupants of a white Nissan AD wagon opened fire on the couple and their baby.

“I don’t know what to …, we cannot say what is the motive right now, we cannot say because he was never in any violence or war with anybody and I can vouch for that. You can ask the entire neighbourhood about my husband, they could tell you the kind of person my husband was,” she said.

She said her entire family has been left traumatised by this incident and that her husband did not deserve this.

“He was a good person and I cannot have complaints about him.”

Family members were up to late yesterday trying to ascertain the motive behind Robinson’s killing.

Police are conducting investigations into this incident.
