The 66th session of the Commission on the status of women began on March 14th at the United Nations in New York City.
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. it brings together Ministers of government, diplomats, civil society and gender advocates to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Antigua and Barbuda was represented at the event by The Honourable Minister Dean Jonas, who has responsibility for gender affairs.
The delegation also comprised officials from the Directorate of Gender Affairs and diplomats from the permanent mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations.
Minister Jonas delivered remarks in the ministerial round table segment in which he advocated for action to advance women’s resilience and prioritization in relation to climate change and disaster risk reduction.
Minister Jonas also attended a bilateral meeting with the Minister responsible for gender in Ireland, the Honourable Roderick O’Gorman and they discussed how Ireland can assist Antigua and Barbuda financially and technically in advancing gender equality as well as matters related to the blue economy in Antigua and Barbuda.
Bilateral meetings are also scheduled with other Caricom Ministers to share ideas and solutions and Minister Jonas will be making a general statement on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda during the conference also.
