The Antigua and Barbuda Nurses Association (ABNA) is hosting the Caribbean Nurses Organization (CNO) 60th Anniversary Celebration and Leadership Summit which began today and continues through to December 1, at the Jolly Beach Resort and Spa, here in Antigua and Barbuda.
The CNO was founded on 17th May 1957 as a non-governmental, non-profit, non-partisan, regional Professional Nursing Organization on the island of Antigua and Barbuda, by Mrs. Mavis Harney the then Matron of the former Holberton Hospital, who now resides in Barbados. The Celebration of CNO has since been moved to 26th October on the birthday of Mavis Harney which has been declared as CNO Day in recognition of her stalwart contribution to the Organization. The Celebration and Leadership summit of National Nurses Association’s (NNA’s) which was planned for October 2017, had to be postponed to the month of November due to the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
The purpose of CNO is to work towards improving the health of all people of the Caribbean, by improving the Standards of Nursing Education and Practice and by advancing the Socio-Economic Welfare of all Nurses. The Organization seeks to influence health and nursing policy regionally and internationally, and empowers its member NNA’s to work on behalf of nursing personnel, nursing, and the peoples of the Caribbean.
The Executive Board Members, Presidents and other designated delegates of Member NNA’s in the Caribbean region will attend the event, which is being held under the theme “Reflecting, Retooling and Re-energizing the Organization to Advance Nursing Practice”. The event will consist of meetings of CNO’s Executive Board and the Leadership of the NNA’s, Educational Sessions aimed at strengthening the Competencies of Nurse Leaders and a Celebration Banquet. The Organization will also use the opportunity to address current issues affecting Nurses and nursing and to review its Constitution and By-laws.
- Delegates will arrive on Tuesday 28th November 21, 2017, housed at the Jolly Beach Hotel and Spa
- Opening Ceremony: An Opening Ceremony will be held at the Jolly Beach Hotel and Spa on Wednesday 29th November, time: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The Minister of Health the Hon Molwyn Joseph has been invited to address the group and declare the opening of the event.
- Educational Sessions as well as business meetings will be held over the 3 days period
- A celebration banquet will be held at the Jolly Beach Resort and Spa to mark the occasion of CNO 60th Anniversary to which His Excellency the Governor General and Lady Williams will attend. His Excellency will address the gathering of Nurses from around the Caribbean Region.
Antigua and Barbuda’s, Nurse Elnora Warner is the current President of the Caribbean Nurses Organization.
