Barbudans looking to create greater self-sufficiency in food production, says Agriculture Committee Chairman Jones

Barbudans are becoming more conscious about self-sufficiency in food production, according to Senator Fabian Jones, Chairman of the Agriculture, Fisheries, Lands and Marine Development Committee.

Accordingly, the sister-island will be resuming its once-prosperous peanut production, and Jones says the season for melons is just around the corner.

Given world events at this time, Senator Jones says that self-sustainability is vital.

According to statistics shared at a recent conference of regional Ministers of Agriculture, Antigua and Barbuda imports about 80 percent of its food.  There are only a few commodities in which the island is self-sufficient, including eggs.
